Vincent did not earn due to lack of appreciation and was supported by his brother. Due to his lack of money he could not readily afford models so got a good mirror and did very good self portraits of which he did 36 of them. This particular self portrait displays the influence of Impressionism on Van Gogh in his use of colour and brushwork. The Impressionists tried to create the colour of natural light by only using pure hues as seen in the colours of the rainbow. They banished premixed browns, blacks and greys from their paintings. Instead, they replaced them with unmixed dashes of pure colour. For example, Van Goghs jacket is painted with red and green brushstrokes which fuse together on the canvas. Some areas mix naturally to form a brown, but some still retain thedashes of the pure unmixed colours. These mix optically in the eye of the spectator and increase the vitality of the colour. The vigour of Van Goghs brushwork heightens the expressive qualities of this self-portrait. The physical texture of his strokes helps to convey the roughness of his tweed jacket and the softness of his felt hat.

I have been very fortunate to have had an incredibly rewarding day job as an Architect with its creativity and variety. My other huge passions are music and artwork and have always had varying amounts and types of art going on throughout my life. The aim recently has been recreating wonderful images I have admired all my life to give people, with a desire for something beautiful, to treasure display and admire in their homes. It has been a hard discipline reproducing methods of a number of completely diferent aritists of the past, different textures, colours, ways of applying paint has been testing but very, very rewarding!! Thank you Carl Ince
