Self-Portrait Print

This piece is based on a series of feet paintings I have been working on since relocating to Cape Breton. The pose of the feet is limited to what I was able to do with my own feet and still be able to photograph. I feel that this painting is a portraiture, of feet - yes, but also can be an identification of someone you know well. Many of us are able to identify a gait, and many are able to identify the shoes or socks of the person behind that gait. Sometimes you can even tell the mood of the person just by the posture of the feet. And of course, sometimes the tattoo gives away the person. I chose the make the colors of the tattoo more vivid that they really are at this point in time. A "facelift" for the tattoo. The walking also aids to the movement of the painting. We can relate to what it looks like for use to look down as we move somewhere.The use of the geometrical tile floor may seem overwhelming when on its own, but it points the way to the feet. It adds an additional element of design, pulling the viewer's eyes away from the heavily weighted down area of the the tattooed leg. I regularly paint in oil paints on wood. I like the way the oil paints are absorbed on the wood. I also like the smoother surface when painting on wood. The sides of the painting are a neutral grey acrylic which absorbs and looks matte. The painting is varnished in a matte varnish.
