About The Artwork

This is a self-portrait I did for an acrylic painting class I took in March 2017. While we were only required to paint ourselves using a mirror, I decided to have fun with the composition and added some symbols that will describe me as a person. The paint tubes scattered around are different aspects of my personality. The spilling paints that form the image symbolizes how the different aspects of my personality combines to form me, as a whole. The expression is somewhat straight and flat, but broken by longingness in the eyes, and a slightly curved lip which hints at a smile, but perhaps there really isn't. This painting was made with artist grade acrylics from Golden and M.Graham & Co., on a professional grade, Windsor and Newton 20" x 24" canvas board. Thus, it requires a frame for mounting. I would recommend a matte white or black, modern block frame that is 3" wide. The painting has a smooth, glossy varnish. This painting was exhibited at the 2nd Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD): Spotlight art exhibition which is a yearly, juried exhibition of art created by ACAD continuing education students.

I am an emerging artist based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I have been part of two juried, local art shows, as well as one international art show. I paint mostly using acrylics, gouache, and watercolours. My style is influenced by pop art, Japanese manga, and surrealism. I like using bright colours and symbolism in my work, which tends to make the paintings look bright and fun, while hiding a contradicting, dark and lonely idea. I am currently pursuing a Computer Science PhD degree at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. My research is about engaging the public in health and energy data awareness through visualizations or interactive visual representations of data. This involves creating artistic, visual representations that are appealing to the majority, yet also functional in the sense that people can read the data from it.
