About The Artwork

‘Social Distancing’, Acrylic on Canvas, 124cm X122cm. The fallouts from the killing of George Floyd in the United States led to an unprecedented out pouring of shock and outrage throughout the world as there were demonstrations all over, under the slogan ‘Black lives matter’ and against police brutality. These protests progressed mostly as a result of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown which led to more reliance on the media reports as people stayed indoors watching television. However, despite the threat of infection with the covid-19, and the new standards of social distancing recommended by governments all over, people went out on the streets to protest police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement gathered momentum. The painting features a crowd of people with hardly any space between them forming the image of George Floyd. The painting suggests that the pressure of the lockdown and the trauma of the images of the death of Mr. Floyd led to a disregard of health precautions suggested, favouring gathering for protestations and sometimes looting and wrecking of edifices, despite the presence of authority (The police). The masses are willing to risk their lives to protest a perceived injustice. Change is on its way... hopefully...
