ABOUT THE ARTWORK

(English) This painting is called “Solveig Venter,” which is Norwegian for "Solveig waits," and is based on “Solveig’s Song,” by Edward Grieg, which was created in connection to the play, Peer Gynt, by Henrik Ibsen. The play was inspired by a Norwegian folk tale about an irresponsible boy, Peer Gynt, who searches for the meaning of being true to yourself through his adventures around the world. Peer fell in love with a girl, Solveig, but her parents forbade the relationship. While Peer went off on his adventures, Solveig stayed faithful and waited for him to come back many years later, as she sang in Grieg’s music. The character Solveig is known to have idealistic and saintly characteristics. The name, Solveig, has several meanings, including “daughter of the sun,” “sun-colored” and “strength.” However, I interpreted the meaning as “the sun’s path,” because of the sound of pronunciation. There are many gold details on the boat because Peer called Solveig “his pure gold.” There is no rope from the boat to the dock because it means that Solveig chooses to wait for him, and the boat does not move. The green colors behind the boat represent the Dovre trolls, whom Peer meets, and everything became marked with devilish atmosphere, in contradiction to the ideal woman, Solveig. Even though Peer was lured in by the trolls, there are several gold flecks through the green, which shows that Solveig was with Peer the entire time. The darker colors change slowly to lighter colors that glimmer because it represents the sun and light, and the lighter palette moves in front of the boat because it depicts the moment at the end of the play where Peer and Solveig finally reunited. ....
