ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Every year, Oxford hosts the St Giles Fair, historically a celebration for the trades people of the city, dating back to 1625 when it was a parish festival to celebrate the feast of the patron saint, St Giles. In the 18th century it was a toy fair, then in the early 19th century it was a general children’s fair.  The funfair grew during mid and late Victorian times.  The poet, Sir John Betjeman, described the fair as, "It is about the biggest fair in England. The whole of St Giles' and even Magdalen Street by Elliston and Cavell's right up to and beyond the War Memorial, at the meeting of the Woodstock and Banbury roads, is thick with freak shows, roundabouts, cake-walks, the whip, and the witching waves." Today the fair is simply there for fun for children and adults alike, united in their enjoyment of a colourful and exuberant street fair. I hope you feel as much excitement as I did when painting it, remembering all the times I've joined in too.

Debrah studied Literature and Fine Art in London, graduating in 1980, but found herself pursuing a number of other career lines on leaving university, including two of her own businesses, teaching, event management and most recently, business networking for Winchester University. Moving from Hampshire to Oxfordshire in 2013 to start a new page in her own story, she made the bold decision to settle full-time into her two first loves – writing and art. As an author, her work – psychological thriller and literary fiction – centres around her love of people-watching and the observation of how action creates reaction, absorbing and reflecting the ambiance of the world and situation in which those reactions occur. We really are what we make ourselves become! In art, however, she is inspired by what has already become: the richness of the landscape all around us as it grows and declines through the seasons, the sensuality that is all around us in the sounds, sensations and sights that we daily experience yet often fail to notice, and in the beauty of colour and light that transforms both us and the simplest scene that we see. Her paintings seek to reflect the richness, luminosity and drama of what we so often take for granted, from the humblest tree to the stormiest sea or sky.
