About The Artwork

This painting is based on observational drawings of an abandoned weapons research station on the South West coast of England. It is slowly being re-claimed by Nature, and is obscured by the wild plants in the foreground. These also break up the picture space into a kind of Cubist multiple-viewpoint with different parts seen from different angles and distances. I wanted to communicate the experience of exploring this isolated, empty place, pushing through the broken fences and undergrowth. I'm greatly influenced by artists like Graham Sutherland and John Piper, and of course Braque and Picasso. The earthiness of the colours is enhanced by being applied to unprimed linen.
