About The Artwork

Like partly opened fans, two sets of carelessly stacked plastic chairs arc across the painting in opposite directions. Containing areas of strong colour and areas of tonal subtleties found in white objects bathed in light, the space is opened out and articulated by the seat on the right hand side with the rippling streaks of light on its surface. The eye is taken from left to right and then drawn back again by the opposing smaller chair backs. Each one in the main group of chairs casts a shadow on to the next, creating a secondary set of related colour/shapes and a more dynamic pictorial balance results because the chairs are stacked slightly clumsily.

Nick Hais was born in Northern Ireland in 1948, but he spent most of his childhood in Dorset and Devon. After leaving school he went to Art College in Newcastle. Nick has been a full time painter since 1976, living and working in Dorset since 1979. "I enjoy the sort of light that is so rich and vibrant that it is very brightly reflected from surfaces, with the result that living shadows are created. I use this quality as it relates to objects and scenes that display an inherent geometry, such as buildings, boats, tables and chairs.. The result is that my paintings are structured compositions of enhanced clarity. My paintings are built up in layers of thin paint. This means that they develop slowly, as this way of painting requires a degree of precision. It is rather an uncompromising method. All my paintings are produced using acrylic paint, almost always on canvas."
