Stark White Gums was inspired by the arid yet colourful landscapes of Broken Hill in the Australian Outback. In the 1900s a young girl Dorothea Mackellar wrote a now famous poem referring to Stark White Gums, lovingly depicting the tough Australian character. The painting has a loose, colourful style that reflects a modern lightness and optimism towards these words and places. This is one of several paintings of these White Gums, I look for gums everywhere I travel, urban domestic travel as well as outback travel. they represent something very beautiful about my home country that has inspired many conversations, and drawings. Murray Bail wrote a whole book on these trees "Eucalyptus" Painting inspirations must include Hans Heysen, but ostensibly I seek a looser relationship with the image and enjoy the contemporary take Luke Sciberras has of trees
