About The Artwork

The narrative in this painting can be interpretated in a number of ways. It has been deliberately left open to the viewer to wind their way through these narratives. Importants elements include the central character. His confusion of garments points towards his own confusion and awkwardness. The style of clothing could also indicate that the character acts as a symbol for Western culture. In contrast, the background is based on old Arabic mosiac design. It is a pattern of a profound beauty- the repetition illuding to an infinate space and the complexity revealing a highly evolved system of mathmatics. Despite this an expressionistic approach is taken when recreating the pattern. The lines and forms are highly distorted and appear to indicate writhing and pulsating movements. This overall effect can be tied into the emotional state of the main character. Though the painting may lean heavily towards satire, an attempt is made to make the piece aesthetically pleasing. In a sense the two conflicting elements, the background and foreground, exist together in an unusual state of harmony.

I am a Scottish artist now settled in Norway. Since my graduation from Edinburgh College of Art in 1999, I have exhibited far and wide. My work is rich in narratives, often satirical and even perhaps a wee bit bizarre. These elements are all rooted in a highly detailed and solid draughtmanship.
