This painting is the fifth in a five painting Rock Power series. It is inspired by my hero Paul-Émile Borduas, especially his painting The Black Star (L'étoile noire), 1957. I saw it for the first time in my high school art history class and always wanted to do a ode to the L'étoile noire. This 5 piece series is called "Rock Power" which I think fits Saatchi's "The New Minimalism" movement. A muted color palette coupled with a careful balance of line and form keeps things simple, in the best possible way. Think of it as addition by subtraction: a single, stand-alone artwork with lots of negative space can speak volumes—without ever raising its voice.
