The Elephant of South America is an interpretation of 'The Elephant of India' by the artist Ravi Varma. Lionel Porter was commissioned to help the Royal Commission on the Arts and the Humanities to develop a new style for a large scale painting. The commission was one of a number that Porter had been given over the years by artists and collectors, including the late Geoffrey Hallett, whose mother Sylvia Hallett was his lifelong friend. The commission to produce a large scale work for this new format was given to Porter by the late Stephen Shore.
