About The Artwork

When I was younger, during the 1980s. I would often meet friends in the pub on a Saturday afternoon for a few pints of beer and entertaining banter. If perchance they were not in the designated pub, I would venture over the road to the local 'Betting shop' where they were sure to be. On one occasion though they were not there either. So whilst I was waiting I decided to have a little 'flutter' myself and the worst possible thing happened... I won. Not just once, but pretty much every time I placed a bet, and whilst I didn't develop any kind of gambling problem it did cause me spend more time in there than I otherwise would have. I have always found betting shops to be depressing, soulless 'little dives' frequented largely by middle aged, smoking men looking anxiously towards the mounted speaker which delivered the manic racing commentary. This painting is based on those memories and was painted entirely from my 'mind's eye', no reference material whatsoever was used. So, any resemblance to anyone living or dead is purely coincidental. And that includes the dog.

kevinfrancissmithart.art I was born in the wagon of a travelling show in Liverpool, England in 1960 into a working class family. Things were a little tight, but Papa did whatever he could; preached a little gospel, sold a couple bottles of Doctor good. I spent my childhood dodging school bullies(these were mainly the teachers), playing with my Action man, and drawing. I didn't go to art college and I regret that, but it just seems to have been something that has always eluded me. I did eventually end up as a self- employed freelance cartoonist and illustrator( aka, Kes ). I am entirely self taught apart from my A level. I have designed greetings cards for numerous card companies and my cartoons have appeared in journals worldwide. I have always continued to paint, although I do seem to be painting a lot more of late. My paintings are inspired by; Dreams, memories, News, booze and probably other artists on occasion. With my background in cartooning, I suppose I can't avoid injecting a little humour and cynicism into my work.
