Supermarine Spitfire in flight The Supermarine Spitfire was a single-engine low-wing single-seater fighter, produced by the British company Supermarine Aviation Works in the 1930s and 1940s. Employed in Europe, North Africa, Australia and Asia, he became one of the symbolic aircraft of the Second World War, above all for his effective and decisive contribution to the victorious English resistance to the German aggression, during the Battle of England and the years of the conflict. In the Battle of England, he shared with Hawker Hurricane the difficult task of defending the territory from the Luftwaffe attacks. Used by the air forces of many allied countries - such as the Soviet Union, Australia and the United States of America - he was the only allied hunters produced throughout the war. Made in about forty different versions, it is probably the plane with a design and construction evolution superior to any other model, throughout the history of the flight. Including the 2556 Seafire, 20351 were produced until 1947, when the last Mk.24 left the assembly lines. After the war it was still long employed by the air forces of France, the Netherlands, Greece, Turkey, Belgium, India, Italy and Czechoslovakia. The last operational mission of the first line of the RAF was completed on April 1, 1954 by a Spitfire reconnaissance PR19 of the No. 81 Squadron RAF. But the Spitfire continued to be used for three more years by the Temperature and Humidity Flight, for meteorological measurements, until June 1957, when it was discharged.
