This painting is part of my "For the Least of These" series about impoverished children. A boy from Burundi, Africa holds a fishing pole while stopped in a moment of contemplation. He lives in a poor area and often goes hungry. The fish at the bottom represent the possibility for him to learn the skills needed to sustain himself and for his community to thrive if provided with resources. The palette is intentionally limited to echo the limitations faced by those in need. The background is layered with a palette knife technique used to evoke the passage of time. I painted from a photo given to me by a children's home in Burundi Africa that I support. My desire is to challenge the viewer to consider their own involvement in providing for those who go hungry. The sides are painted white and it is wired and ready to hang.

During this time, she continued doing artwork. Over the 12 years she worked as a counselor Mel was able to use art as a powerful tool to help people with diverse issues, challenges and backgrounds. Her work as a therapist informed her artwork as she learned more about how thought, emotion and behavior intersect in everyday life. Several years ago, she felt God drawing her back to creating art full time and left her position as a therapist to focus on painting. Mel lived in the Chicago area for much of her career.
