This is one of a series of works dedicated to environmentally-challenged regions. Each piece combines abstract, expressionistic forms inspired by nature with a hard-edged, brilliantly colored vertical shape. This one, the first in the series, was inspired by the beautiful Ashokan Reservoir in my immediate surroundings. It was dug in the early 1900s, displacing thousands of residents and farms through eminent domain, and supplies water to New York City (my other home). The complexity of land-use issues is encapsulated for me by this contradiction.

I'm a painter and printmaker based in Woodstock, New York and New York City. My work is a slightly hallucinatory, abstract exploration of the natural world and the feelings it evokes. Past works explored human forms set translucently into natural settings and textures inspired by nature. Though I've been an artist all my life in some form or another, my earlier professional life included work as a creative director for major consumer magazines. maxinedavidowitz.com
