That's How The Light Gets In Print

As seen in the UK edition of House & Garden Magazine, November 2017. An artist's self-portrait inspired by the song of late legendary Canadian poet, musician, and writer Leonard Cohen, and the powerful words from his song 'Anthem": "Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There is a crack in everything That's how the light gets in". This inspiring phrase has become a personal mantra throughout my life. The concept gives hope and affirmation to the unique opportunities found between the cracks of "a rock and a hard place", or when the conventional paths are not right for you. The canvas was recovered from another attempted painting that I had put in storage where the failed incomplete canvas became torn in the upper right hand corner. Rather than throw it out, a few years later I decided to make 'something from nothing' and reclaimed this damaged object by using it's flaw as the jumping off point, and conceptual strength of the piece: the place where the light gets it. We all become weathered and suffer damages from the challenges and circumstances of life, but there is always hope, light, and resilience to be found in the cracks of the very things that challenge us. I hope that by illuminating the power that Leonard Cohen's words have had on my own path and journey, finding my 'way in' as an artist as well as overcoming personal circumstances, that my collector will be inspired, reassured, and reminded of their own unique pathways to personal truth, realization of dreams, and abundance to be found through finding light in the dark.
