The passage of trials in the wilderness that Jesus experienced is certainly familiar to us. However, there is no harm in rereading this story, while reflecting on the profound message contained in it. Focus on the 3 implied messages that exist in each of these trials, so we may be able to take anticipatory actions or resistance when the same trial comes to us. According to my reflection, this is the implied message of the 3 trials Satan offered Jesus. First, the urge to strengthen the knowledge of god's word (vv. 4). Man does need food to live, but the power of the word is also able to give life, even able to change the fact of life that we experience. Second, be careful not to tempt God by using God's word as a pretext or self-justification (vv. 7). Make god's word a guide and correction of life, not as a justification for mistakes or to force the desire to be fulfilled by God. Third, faithfulness to God until the end of life (vv. 10). The call to worship only and be dutiful to God must be kept until the end of life, and also continue to be echoed from generation to generation, so that they do not turn away from God, then devote themselves to other gods. The fact that Jesus triumphed over trials not only strengthens, but also gives hope to our struggle against trials. There should be no reason for us to constantly lose. If Jesus wins, then we can also win by the help of His Spirit!
