About The Artwork

This type of profile — an African woman with a beautiful head wrap called a ‘Geles’ in Nigeria— has been an image that has been in my dream since I was teen. I am mesmerized by the fabric, folds, and colors of the many headdresses in many African countries. I painted this Nigerian model from a photo I found on royalty-free images website as part of a portraiture class assignment. I loved painting the colors and folds of her crown and I hope that viewers notice the crown details and appreciate the beauty, art, and color that many African women wear (and the beauty of their cultures as well). This is probably my favorite piece that I’ve painted to date.

My mother was an artist and taught me how to paint. I still refer to her typed notes on mixing paint for darker flesh tones. I spent many years playing the bass, singing, and writing songs in San Francisco and Sacramento, California. While I was playing music I was painting casually — mostly dancers and portraits. When my mother passed away, I started painting again as a memorial to my mother. I am still growing as an artist. I paint portraits and dancers in oil, acrylic, watercolors, pastel, and digital mediums. I am currently working on an oil series on the Mexican board game called “Lotería” and broadening my subjects to include landscapes.
