ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This mural was done for a local art competition where the theme was, uninspiringly, 'Memories'-the organisers were hoping for horse and cart, people baling hay by hand etc. So I needed something to make me energised and i took the stupendous and impossible story (but true!) of the small bird which migrates a full longitude of the earth every year from my home town in Foxton New Zealand to the Yukon delta, Alaska almost in the arctic circle. Ignominiously named E7 (what else would a scientist choose but letters and numbers), I chose to champion the kuaka's flight and plight. We may well witness her demise just minutes before our own. BUT feel ihi* for his majesty, speed, courage and simple beauty. *Ihi-awe
