About The Artwork

Inspired by old ottoman trays and their symbols this round painting is a tribute to a long tradition of craftsmen. This collection of round canvas was developed during Sophia's stay in the town of Samokov, Bulgaria, during the 4th edition of the Samokov International Painting and Sculpture Symposium. The 2018 edition was dedicated to the "cultivated" or "cultured" land of Samokov, an idea explored through referencing the rich artistic heritage of the town by Sophia. More specifically, Sophia presented 4 round canvases, referencing the earth and all things beginning but never ending, a recurrent shape of the ongoing "Book of Hours" project and a rectangular one, referencing the iconic fountain of the town. As in previous works related to Samokov, the Byzantine, Ottoman and Jewish heritage are here shown to intertwine. The past and present, the re-emergence of sacred symbols and signs is another recurrent theme in these works. The technique is a combination between pouring and transfers, a mixed media work. This work is now part of the collaction of the Samokov Municipal Gallery but commissions with a similar subject are welcome.
