The Flag of the United States of Humankind Print

This gorgeous watercolors and graphic markers artwork on paper is my intention to share with you, and with our world the idea that all the countries, near and far are connected deeply despite the geo-graphical borders. Those are just lines! Just lines on a map! A drawing on a drawing! So if a tiny visual thing such as a border's black line on a map can create such division, here I state that my flag, which is a visual wonder, too, can contribute to expanding the mind's vision of the mind's division. Our minds wish to divide us, to separate colors, religions, tastes, features, just like we are supposed to separate colors in the washing machine! I painted this mandala shaped artwork, starting with a pencil on good artist paper, on a beautiful sunny winter morning. I started from a circle in the middle. Then I used a cotton string, just like the old times, tied to the tip of the back of a brush, which served as a hinge, and I used the other end of the string to tie a pencil which I traced a few essential circle-shapes here and there with. Now I had a general idea of how large it would become and how many layers and numbers of circles there would be. Then I realized I didn't want a perfect circle thing because it would look strange within the rectangular frame of the paper so I started to measure slightly shorter vertical radii and slightly longer horizontal ones, so that, circle after circle they would turn into egg-like wave-shapes. I also like this part. Not only did I wish to recall mandala art, and to create a fantastically vibrant patchwork of colors, but also I wished the whole piece to look like it's very definite, and solid in the center and to look like it fades out into infinity towards the outer edges. Thus doing my Flag, well our Flag, would have looked as if it never ended, thus comprising every single being of every single inch of this Earth, in all their infinite variety of colors, in one harmonious embrace.
