The greenman was a popular subject for architectural ornamentation in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Greenmen were created as stone sculptures or made from terra cotta. This face, is adapted from a photograph that I took of a greenman grotesque on an old building in Vancouver, BC. A grotesque is the head or face only of an architectural element, rather than a gargoyle that incorporates the entire body of a stone figure. I altered the colors of the original photo in Photoshop, printed it out and then created this original painting based loosely on the altered image with vivid, exaggerated color that replace the monochromatic tones of the stone carving.
