About The Artwork

Iconic women have always glamorized the red dress. Artists have long been drawn to paint women in red dresses, including Edward Munch's "Dance of Life", Renoir's "Gabrilelle in a Red Dress", Rosetti's "The Loving Cup" and Irma Stern's "The Red Dress". The color red carries rich and even contradictory interpretations: opulence, seduction, eroticism, as well as chastity and purity. Red is the color of Valentine hearts and also the devil! Red carries significant meaning across many cultures--brides wear it for good fortune in China and India: matadors in Spain unfurl red capes to attract bulls; some Native American tribes have painted their faces red for power and strength using red created from earth's bounty--berries, iron oxides, beets and roots. My Red Dress emerged as I worked in my studio creating art for my forthcoming book, "Dear Chicken Susan/The Artful Awakening of a Traveling Hedonist". During a break from my book, I answered a call for art submissions in response to a newly-created red dress from the fashion house of Alexander McQueen. The idea of interpreting the iconic red dress from the back--a different perspective--appealed to my curiosity and my red dress began to claim its place in my awareness. My Red Dress, "THE MEEK AND OBEDIENT NEVER WEAR RED" has become the most collected piece of my current work.
