About The Artwork

It was painted in 1990 in London where Oleg Mingalev rented an art atelier in Cathcart Road somewhere near Chelsea area. He just emigrated from USSR living already more then one year in UK. It was an experiment for him how bohemian life in London may inspire him and how it is different to Muscovite life. The subject of power, will to power, probably power over the world was interesting not only to Roman emperors and such funny ancient tourists like Alexander of Macedonia. Not only to Nietsche or Machiavelli or not only to the ordinary guy who usually trying to control a local market with bananas and oranges. But the philosophy of power in fact has also a spiritual meaning which we can call sometimes paranormal. The composition of the picture with unstable triangle and the spinning globe on the top of it with the profile of some one who pretends to be.... who is a pretender, could be already an emperor, may be already not in such dynamic landscape of marks of eternal struggle which is in his mind. Ironically, artist made his self-portrait a bit like caricature with signs on his face similar to gladiators' hassle. Contrast colors emphasize dramaturgy of moment, at the same time unwavering confidence and stability. But all of that because of his conscience which is so close to eternal values and virtues. That's he is so close to The God
