About The Artwork

The Lowcountry of South Carolina is one of the most lovely places on the planet (and I've seen a lot of lovely places) and the salt marshes that reflect and refract the light offer endless beauty. Anyone who lives here is constantly struck by the ever-changing beauty of the skies and water interaction. I've always wanted to attempt to create my own favorite skies: where the huge, dramatic clouds interact with foreboding dark sky -- but with the marvelous reveals of sunlight that often cut through. It took a number of months to create the right combination of light and dark that brought out the feeling I had in mind. I thought of the dozens of scriptural passages that reference the clouds, part of a wondrous meditation of a much highter power. The finished painting demanded a certain intimation of power behind the beauty. I considered it finished, twice, as it hung in our living room -- a practice I always take with significant pieces. I need to know that it is going to be compelling, and that you will notice it every time you look at it, not perceive it as "decoration" alone. It should speak to you, and really, it should say something a little different each time. It went back into the studio for darker skies above the clouds, and then it went back for more foreground detail. The foreground detail is particularly pleasing to me, the way the spartina grass interacts to show the water there. I have always known that any painting I create is a gift from God, but this one in particular.....

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Painting was not my first life's work, but it has fed my family for the last 20 years, and I am proud of that. I came to it late, with a lifetime of travel and stories to paint. I worked hard at them, full time all the time and the reward was that people liked my stories -- still do! -- so I kept painting them. They've shown in museums and galleries, sold to cities and corporations, and to thousands of individuals all over the world who loved them and put them in their homes. I consider myself blessed.
