About The Artwork

The Pyrozoic Era is a mythical period in the history of the planet of some fantastical alien race, during which the entire planet was engulfed in fire and flame and jets of poisonous gases. An account of this period in the planet's ancient history is written in the form of glyphs in a legend that occupies the left side of the work, while a depiction of the planet surface during that period (an artist's impression, if you will) occupies the right side of the work. Conceptually, an objective of this work was to create a painting where one portion of the composition is occupied with a kind of key or legend, employing the use of discrete glyphs in a right-to-left (RTL) arrangement, and where another portion is occupied by a figurative - though still abstract and impressionistic - representation of a landscape. Additionally, other objectives guiding the production of the work included: 1. The use of metallic paints (silver for the glyphs in the legend on the left, as well as the vertical divider between the two areas, and gold for the tongues of fire in the landscape on the right). 2. The use of multiple layers of metallic pain, with interstitial glazes, to create the effect of great depth. This technique was used to create the fiery planet landscape, with the flames furthest away in the distance having had the most coats of glaze applied over them, so that they are darkened and their details become lost. 3. The use of toothed silicone implements to create impasto surface texture and visual detail (by the pigment in the glaze layers settling into the grooves / troughs / valleys in the highly textured surface. This kind of implement, of varying sizes, was used in the creation of the glyphs in the legend, the texture for the background of the legend, the vertical divider line that separates the two sides, and the multitude tongues of fire. - The use of artist's tape to mask off the areas and the divider line to allow for precise boundaries between these elements. - The use of asemic glyphs or notations symbols (the legend on the left). - The use of calligraphic or impressionistic gestures in the figurative representation of a landscape (the tongues of fire). It should be noted that, as a result of the use of metallic paints, the resulting work is dynamic, so that the depth and highlights change according to one's viewing angle and the qualities of the light in the room or the time of day.
