About The Artwork

This painting is a convergence for me. As I create my Altitude Series- epic mountainous forms where value is more important to the story than color, I am working through an exciting process. I am intrigued by creating work that plays with the perception of space and sense of distance, as well as how to draw focus around the canvas. The Road Less Traveled By is the next thread in my creative tapestry. I set out to employ my value over color skills, but challenged myself to add more depth using color fields instead of my signature wash layers. I selected a tight, saturated palette and utilized it to carry your gaze in, around, and through. I have also used smaller, deliberately placed petite shapes to assist as well. I incorporated the edges of the canvas into the art, expanding the work by giving the viewer a different perspective from each side. I am inspired by the master painters, of course, and some of my choices in this work do lean toward les Fauves (the wild beasts!). Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, André Derain, and a few others created a short-lived style called Fauvism. They too worked with bold colors separated from their representational role and an application of paint that speaks to the artist’s hand instead of representing something as it appears in nature. I decided to title this work after one of my favorite poems: The Road Not Taken, by Robert Frost because I feel like this will become one of my seminal works as it blends all facets of my painting techniques, a convergence. I am choosing to take the road less traveled by, meaning my path. My path is colorful, vivid, solid, joyous, and thought-provoking. You are welcome to come along! I have documented my process in creating this work on my Instagram (katewilson.artist) and Facebook (katewilson.artist.1) accounts. Please stop by to really see what went into making this painting for you! When it ships, I will send with it the Certificate of Authenticity for your records. The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. -Robert Frost

I am driven to create work by distilling nature into abstract form that beckons me into the sublime, that place where emotion holds dominance over vocabulary. As a contemporary artist, I am inspired by the balance between precision and freedom. I create meditative spaces that invite curiosity. My work is influenced by my extensive travels, love of nature, and living along the coast of Rhode Island. My abstract and representational paintings, installations, sculptures, and large-scale photographic works are characterized by organic forms and the use of nontraditional materials. My most recent paintings, "Stasis & Metamorphosis Collections," are poetic. Their graceful sculptural and curvilinear forms in sophisticated color palettes seem to float in the atmosphere.
