About The Artwork

'The thicket' is an allegorical piece that explores memories that remain firmly rooted in the present. Memories that are so persistent that they cultivate the very fabric of one's being. At first glance there is certainly an apparent absurdity about the painting. The subject's head is replaced by a fertile, tangled thicket of trees and flowers. Three characters appear to enjoy their isolation amongst the plants. However, the inclusion of the thicket could also describe a memory that has become so prominent in the subject's mind that it is ingrained in his very character. It is not necessarily apparent if this memory is fondly recalled or if it is more ominous or melancholic in nature. The background and the posturing of the hands offer some context. The hands are folded nervously together, pointing to some hesitation or unease. The background depicts an autumnal floral pattern which stands in bleak contrast to the luscious thicket. This decorative aspect could well describe the reality that surrounds the subject. The subject has either retreated into a memory that offers a comfortable escape or has a hypnotic, haunting presence.

I am a Scottish artist now settled in Norway. Since my graduation from Edinburgh College of Art in 1999, I have exhibited far and wide. My work is rich in narratives, often satirical and even perhaps a wee bit bizarre. These elements are all rooted in a highly detailed and solid draughtmanship.
