The Things We Own End Up Owning Us Print

My studio is in Mexico City and i've travelled extensively throughout the country, wherever I am I'm always on the lookout for local cultural subject matter to work with. When I spent time on the Pacific Coast my neighbour bred and trained roosters for professional fighting, its how he made his living its a tradition steeped in history going back hundreds of years. Cockfights are taken really seriously with big bets going down on fights it's quite an atmosphere, lots of tequila flowing banda music blaring out the ring lit from a 2bar flourescent tubing. When the fight starts the cocks almost double in size their feathers sticking out as they size each other up they feint and fly slashing with their feet, blood and feathers time and time again they strike. I wanted to capture this sense of movement and intensity with this work it's a continuation from my bullfight series with the painterly technique i've worked on using the screen and squeegee as a brush rather than a printing blade. It's also a follow on piece from one I exhibited in Hong Kong at Art Futures Gallery in 2017 that work is in a wonderful private collection there now. The 3D effect when wearing the ChromaDepth glasses I include with the original work is really strong with this piece . The fight pops out at the viewer the layers of colour become feathers the fighters alive. The canvas is unstretched due to shipping costs but stretcher bars are readily available and framers or good art shops offer stretching services for a fraction of the cost of shipping the work stretched.
