About The Artwork
This seascape was painted en plein air on Queens Beach in Cape Town. I use light sensitive emulsion to paint my seascapes. The light sensitive emulsion is used in a historical photographic process from the 1840's and I'm using it in an unconventional manner. The cyanotype process was one of the first non-silver technologies used to create photographic images. My inspiration to create cyanotype prints comes from Anna Atkins, a British botanist whose use of cyanotypes - or 'sunprints' - of plants and algae in botanical studies paved the way for the use of photography in scientific publishing. I use the cyanotype process in an experimental abstract manner and enjoy the process as much as the art work itself.
