About The Artwork

Acrylic on canvas. Double portrait of G. Halepa and Theophilo. Soft hues and tones of purple, blue and yellow in the form of pixel compose the painting. There is no strong color contrast. G. Halepas and Theophilos lived in the newly formed Greek state after the revolution of 1821. They both born on an Aegean island. Theophilos was a self-taught painter and Halepas an educated sculptor. Both surrendered to artistic creation. The difficulties they faced in their turbulent lives did not stand as a catalyst in their work.

Maria Chatzaki was born and lives in Greece. She studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh. She is concerned with the "here and now" of the work, as well as the "here and now" of life. She is not "afraid of" notions like sensations, emotion, sensibility, aesthetics, empathy. Words that in the Greek language have the same root. She also doubts that they are notions that conflict with intellect and logic. She believes that they are equally important to explore. She admires artists like P. Klee, M. Rothko, S. Delaunay-Terk, Agnes Martin. She also loves poetry, theater, music, other art forms and philosophy. 1) Benjamin W. (2008) The work of art in the age of technological reproducibility, 2) Rothko M.
