Titanic sails on Print

This is a mixed media image which has an ink based guide to the painting and then water colourfor the complete top surface. This is produced with traditional water colour painting, mostly wet on wet but the final stage such as the white frothy water at the bow is wet on dry with a touch of white. The wet on wet technique means the paint runs and merges but I wanted to maintain the tradition of the white area in this case the top of the ship and the masts to remain paper and not be painted over. Hence needed an ink base guide for accuracy. So the wet paint has been taken to the edges of the ship and the mast without it running over onto the wet paper. There has been slight colouring to the top of the front mast which seemed likely. This close tolerance work was achieved by using powerful day light lighting and haed mounted illuminated magnifying glasses for the detail around the mast, funnels and upper deck. High quality paints and paper are used and the first picture shows it still taped to the holding board which I think could look quite good as it is but of course it can be mounted and framed. Close up pictures show how the wet running paint has been controlled to leave the plain paper showing through.
