About The Artwork

This unframed work is an improvisation with calligraphic brushwork on Yupo plastic paper. My process starts with only the briefest suggestion of a direction and proceeds with one stroke suggesting the next, until a strong form develops. Frequently I start with a dark color, sometimes having laid down water on the "paper" with a broad brush. The exciting happenings when my brush strokes pass through the wet areas suggest other possibilities and directions. I might then mix white with the dark color and lay down strokes of it beside, across or through the dark areas. Eventually I use lighter and brighter colors, hopefully in such a way that a pleasing combination results.
