About The Artwork

I have been inspired by Native American genre art since I was a child staring up at my mom's Lee Bogle Collection ... As I matured I fell in love with the idea of creating conceptually and anatomically accurate art, but with an emotional knack for color choices. I have seen the "End of the Trail" monument, originally by James Earle Fraser depicted many many times over the years - usually at a side profile silhouetted with a sunset scene behind... I wanted to honor the intentions behind the original piece, but also add in some of my own imagery: The Horse is wearing battle worn War Paint - in the traditions of the Plains People, each paint adornment on their horses had specific purpose behind them - the circles around the eyes was to lend the horse good sight in the heat of battle. Bars on the body depicted how many successful battles the Rider and Horse had been in. Feathers honored the birds they came from; due to the bird(s) abilities to fly they are considered close to the Creator - all birds have particular meanings, but adorning feathers was a way to be close to the Creator through that bird. This horse is gaunt and possibly dehydrated - his War Paint has begun sweating off ... the feathers in his mane were intentional adornments to honor the Great Spirit and the Rider's beliefs. The Rider is weary and battle worn, but he also has an air of defiance - look at his eye-he stares right back ... there are unseen forces that seem to push the Rider and Horse toward or over the edge, but they valiantly resist. The longer you look at this piece, the more certain parts of it call out to you ... I named it Transcend because I think it is time to elevate perceptions above where they have been so long ...
