About The Artwork

This is a free fantasi painting inspired from a walk around Tri Cime di Lavaredo near Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Dolomites in summer of 2022. This was a particular dry year, without snow in the Alpes, and heatwaves and drought with a centre around Po riverbasin. This is also an area which formed the border between Italy and Austria/Hungary during 1. World War with many artefacts in the terrain from that frontier (and many dead soliders). The painting is abstract, showing the landscape near Tri Cime de Lavaredo with peaks of red chalk (sanguine) deposits. Sanguine (/ˈsæŋɡwɪn/) or red chalk is chalk of a reddish-brown colour, so called because it resembles the colour of dried blood. It has been popular for centuries for drawing (where white chalk only works on coloured paper). The word comes via French from the Italian sanguigna and originally from the Latin "sanguis". The painting is an abstraction of the real landscape, formed by a mix of high peaks with a mix of carbonate and sandstone mountains and deposits (the Dolomia Principale). The Dolomia Principale is up to 2 kilometers thick in places, and was deposited over an area several hundred kilometers wide. It represents a gigantic deposition of carbonate rocks on the edge of the Tethys Seaway, over 200 million years ago.It can be found across many of the mountain ranges of Northern Italy, folded and faulted by what happende next. About 100 million years ago, Pangaea had fully broken up, and the great seaway between Eurasia and the broken pieces of Gondwanaland was closing. As Africa impinged upon Europe, the sediments that had once been deposited on the margins of the Tethys found themselves thrust up above the surface.

Zonation paintings focus on integrating and balancing the elements: lines, tones and colours. I follow an expressionist painting philosophy inspired by Cézanne, Kleé and followers. Motives: Copenhagen cityscapes, croquis, stilleben. Artworks in acrylics, oil, aqua oil, multicoloured chalk, aquarelle and pencils. Artist video: http://vimeo.com/5322606 Artist podcast (Fr): http://podcloud.fr/podcast/choses-a-savoir-art/episode/artiste-a-decouvrir-hans-jorgen-henriksen I use the acronym 'de Hansi' in order to distinct my painting activities from my professional work as a hydrologist. I am a Danish hydrologist currently working as a principal investigator and researcher at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland at Øster Voldgade 10, 1350 in Copenhagen (working in close cooperation with Copenhagen University institute for geology and geography). I am known for my research in the field of hydrogeology, with a focus on groundwater resources and their management, as well as the impact of climate change on groundwater systems. I have published many papers in the international scientific journals, and I am also a member of several scientific organisations.
