The large-scaled Underwater series, displayed as a triptych in this exhibition, depict underwater scenes of a deliberately faceless human figure at swim. As an avid swimmer, WANG Chi-Sui experiences a profound sense of redemption each time she looks skyward from the water. Here, these images trimmed from different perspectives can stand alone like frames from a movie storyboard, while also embodying an evident internal coherence. Drifting between the concrete and the abstract, these works are not about exercise, but are inarguably self-portraits of the artist. The human figure is at times clear and at other times fragmented beyond recognition by the swirling rippled patterns of the water, representing the inevitable events in the course of a lifetime as well as signifying the possibilities for rebirth.
