About The Artwork

Circling back to her creative practice, we may regard WANG Chi-Sui’s attempts in recent years to capture the momentary modality of water droplets, or her dozens of sketches reminiscent of botanical illustrations, as entry points for a close reading. Every drop of water on her canvas is autonomous; some like grains of rice or pearls, some resemble spikes or blades. Occasionally, in the painterly lines and smudges a visual interest emerges, akin to that in calligraphy brush strokes. Viewed side-by-side, they seem to be portraits of members of the same bloodline, while also reflecting prismatically in part their individuality at different moments and in varied states. A multi-layered observation reveals that the irregularity of the water droplets combines with other events and objects to form complex imagery. One phrase following another, they are strung together to form a highly rhythmic, though unspoken, poetic andante. Extending from this are the works in the Molecule Voyage series, where drops of water are depicted from a unique perspective, as they seem to fall from clear skies and to condense in mid-air. Nothing is superfluous in the pure and mutual resonance with distant white clouds that serves as a reminder of the necessity to revisit the point of origin. There are works where water serves as a curtain, behind the gossamer are views that may be entirely unfamiliar or which conjure a sense of déjà vu. The mutual reflection seems to hint at something that is about to occur or has just occurred. Beads of water in varying sizes appear against a dark backdrop or blurred dim backgrounds in a suspended visual narrative that not only lends the work an increased sense of ambiguity, but also symbolizes concealed parts of historical facts that will be revealed at a specified time.
