About The Artwork
A night at the Opera (Opera Garnier, Paris) I feel an unconditional awe for Parisian monuments from the 19th century for their architecture and beauty . For some years I ‘ve been photographing this building to have the best frame, the good atmosphere, the light. The front lights of the Opera at night in December make it standing out from the blue-red sky of the night. The colours I used symbolise the Opera: Red for Passion, white and blue for the dance tutus, black for the male tights… This painting is a tribute to the Parisian monument I love the most. A tribute to its extravagant architecture from the 19th century, bold and flamboyant. The painting style is dynamic and bold. It is made up of successive, vivid and colourful brushstrokes that makes the painting lively. My painting is made of thousands of multi-coloured touches of paint, sometimes imperceptible: these little impressionism touches give the painting an atmosphere. I don’t want to make it realistic. Acrylic on stretched canvas on wooden frame, protected by an bright acrylic varnish, to enhance the colours. The sides of the painting are painted in blue night: no need to frame.

I live and work in Paris suburbs. Living in a big city for half my life has influenced my work. I have a fascination for cities: noisy, overwhelming and lively, yet hiding people loneliness. I paint mostly urban landscapes: the interiors (shops, cafe, theatre house) full of details and colourful with very few details for the people: they are just part of the scenery. I’ve worked for the theatre for ten years and that experience gave me a love of colours, of framing my subject a certain way. I’m not looking for the exact repliqua of the reality but for an emotion I want to convey in my paintings through colors. My work is made of lots of layers of acrylic on a canvas, quick rough brush strokes and vivid colours. I use acrylic because it’s a medium that corresponds to my character: I’m impatient and this material suits me for it allows my painting a speed, a raw aspect, sometimes violent; I work in a kind of urgency.
