Painting is messy. It is not logical. It is not a practical solution to a simple problem, it is a reaction to chaos. I am not looking to make perfect sense of the world though logic. For me, the world cannot make sense, and maybe it isn’t supposed to. The world is full of paradoxes. I embrace them, on a canvas, with vivid colors and sporadic patterns, with movement and vibrancy. I am interested in finding order in chaos, and finding chaos in order. I do this though abstraction by juxtaposing structured, planned, and geometric elements with loose, intuitive, and organic elements. I often emphasize this juxtaposition by playing with the thickness and texture of paint. To me, the chaos of the world is beautiful, as are the moments of order. It is true that there is a certain beauty in the sheer, indisputable logic of an equation. There is comfort in knowing that sometimes you can think your way through a problem and come to a logical answer. Sometimes I need to feel like things makes perfect sense. But a world where everything is in black and white is not the world we live in, and it is not the world I wish to live in. I see no logical equation to human nature, or to the world. To me, the beautiful senselessness of painting will always make more sense. And what’s a painting without a little color?
