About The Artwork

“Floriography” is the language of flowers. Thousands of years of folklore, mythology & religious tradition have contributed to the meanings we ascribe to flowers today. Floriography peaked in popularity during the Victorian era when, armed with floral dictionaries, gentlemen would send cryptic messages to ladies with specific nosegays or tussie mussies called “talking bouquets”. Still today we have a tradition of birth month flowers, the meanings of which are rooted in floriography. Similar to zodiac signs or birthstones, it is believed you inherit the characteristics of the flower assigned to your birth month. Jonquils are March’s flower & they symbolize friendship and domestic bliss. This sunny bloom conjures up feelings of its native home– the sun-drenched Mediterranean coastline. Although closely related to the Daffodil, Jonquils distinguish themselves by their thin, tubular leaves and multiple blooms per stem. In many places around the world, the appearance of the Jonquil each year signifies the arrival of spring and is therefore much anticipated & celebrated. I've always been inspired by botanicals, but in addition to their beauty, I wanted to create a collection with an added layer of significance for the viewer. So whether you're a March baby or you just love Jonquils, I hope the history & meaning of the flower speak to you on an intellectual, emotional or spiritual level.

I fell in love with watercolor because of its wildness; that tension, suspension of pigment in water. . . that balance of control & chaos. That’s why I love watercolor and it’s how I want to live. Living as an artist is part of that tension for me. As a business owner, you have control but the lack of external structure & guaranteed outcomes can also feel chaotic at times. In the end, it’s about using your best gifts every day, putting a little more beauty into the world for others to enjoy & facing a degree of uncertainty with grace because it’s what you’re called to do. I love it with all my heart. I live in Greensboro, NC with my husband Joel & our cat Britin. I currently work out of my little upstairs home studio & en plein air whenever I can.
