About The Artwork
This painting was inspired by the diligence of Nigeria women and their modest means of livelihood. I also get attracted to lushness of green vegetables and ankara fabrics worn by most Nigerian market women. The designer bag is a metaphor used to depict the riches they acquire through their trade and hard work. The painting was done using quality oil paints and canvas. I work using visible brush strokes with thick paints without any medium. The result is an interesting textured strokes forming various forms of the subjects. I practically want each form to be felt as though they could be held. The painting will be shipped in a tube.

Nigeria
As a painter, I work largely with oil colour on canvas using bold and strong pallettes. I paint expressively using pallette knives and brushes thereby creating textures on the canvas as I build up colours, adding complexity to the painting until my subject becomes real to me. The end result is an artifact of the process. My background impacts my art a great deal. This influence allows me to draw inspirations from my personal experiences, my thoughts on various social issues and my immediate environment. I empathize and challenge the status quo and like to confront issues head-on. However sometimes I tend to simply set an agenda with my subjects. I also write poems (or prose as the case may be) for most of my works which can be read on instagram@seyelawson_art.
