About The Artwork
Symbol of their beauty, the hair of black women contains a real story. Traditional, emancipatory, demanding, these are millennia of hairstyles today witnessing the privileged relationship of black women with their hair. By choosing the scarf, it is this story that I wanted to illustrate. Hand-painted and solidified by various techniques, the wax in traditional colors and patterns, houses a bun of raised braids. Remembering Africa and its expanses of sand, I carefully selected a palette of yellow for the background of the painting. Using a "brushing" technique, I reproduced the sand whirlpools at the crest of the dunes, blown by the wind. Thus was born Waasi, the woman with the headscarf.
