VIEW IN MY ROOM
This painting started as a personal challenge and obsession to put everything and the kitchen sink into it, create extreme texture and then do acrylic transfer over it (something that is monstrously hard to do). Obsession and transgression started to form the themes of the work, and thinking of the word wicked, I plugged in my earbuds and started binge listening to Chris Issak's Wicked Game. This is about all I am willing to say, other than to admit, that after I finished this piece I was utterly and completely emotionally drained. I like the idea of combining the painterly with mediated forms and multimedia. I textured the canvas with fragments of paper, sand and dust from my studio floor with acrylic texture medium. Over this I used laserjet prints and transferred them directly into the paint and removed the paper entirely and combined that with direct gestural painting. (I often scan forms while moving them to create unusual effects.) I took patterns, and moved them while scanning them. I also embedded ballpoint pen and glitter in the paint layers, as well as using archival artist's acrylic spray paint and artist's acrylic marker. This is archivally sealed with an isolation coat of spray Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish and varnished with Winsor Newton UV protective removable MSA varnish. It ships mounted in a neutral wood floater frame.

My last three years have been spent fighting potentially fatal lung disease. This had reached the point I was too exhausted to work, but early this year I got a lung transplant! I had been waiting, listed for transplant for two years. My art reflects a faith of a kind. I believe in the elusive. I believe in the poetic. I believe in ecstasy and in joy. Color is life. My dark experiences have deepened the kind of beauty I am seeking. Lung transplants are the most risky transplants. They come with a significant risk of fatal complications. My recent work has been inspired by the recent experiences of loss and the treachery of the body. Prior to transplant, I did a what I call the "Embodiment Series" of paintings which I will be posting on Saatchi Art as my recovery progresses. I prepared myself for my hospital stay by getting some small art supplies. While in the hospital, I was hooked up to multiple IV lines, and feeding tubes. I was on a ventilator three times. The work I did were abstractions inspired by my body, the medical equipment, the views out my window, the folds in my bed sheets and so forth. I am currently working on some digital posters I will be posting for sale on Saatchi based on the hospital work, which I call the "Hospital Suite".
