About The Artwork

This painting was inspired by a hike enjoyed last Summer in the Alpine meadows of Northern British Columbia, Canada. It was almost 40 degrees Celsius, during a heat wave, but there was snow under our feet. The experience of being warm in shorts and t-shirts, yet with cool snow under our hiking shoes was an incredible sensory experience. It was as if we were walking on a snow cone. We spent hours in front of this scene, having lunch, laughing, and even 'skiing' down the hills using our simple shoes as skiis. This painting was created with the hopes of sharing the overwhelming sense of exhilaration, joy and inspiration felt that day while hiking with a group of friends. It is meant to emit the joy and beauty of life itself. This painting comes with hanging hardware, ready to hang. My painting style is quite 'smooth', so the texture of the painting's surface is gentle and minimal, with slight gradation. This work was created using high quality oil paints handmade by artists in Montréal, Quebec. The palette includes oil paints containing fluorescent pigments, lending to the energy and vibrancy of the painting.

“My painting practice asks questions about human interaction with the land through outdoors leisure activities in a North American context.” Born in Vancouver in 1986, Richardson was raised in Erin, Ontario, with periods of time spent living in Australia and visiting the South Pacific as a child and teen. She obtained an HBA from Western University in London, Ontario in 2008, and an MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London, UK in 2013. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is held in private collections in Europe, North America and South Africa. She participated in the Joya: arte + ecología / AiR residency program in Spain in 2013 and the Life Collection Artist Exchange program in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2014. She participated in a mural painting project for the Redbull Amphiko Festival in Soweto, Johannesburg in 2014. She spent four years as a faculty member in the Fine and Performing Arts department at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario, and during this period she was also Curator at the WKP Kennedy Gallery. She recently relocated to the Peace Region in Northeastern British Columbia to focus on her art making practice full time, and is currently preparing for a solo exhibition at the Dawson Creek Art Gallery in October, 2022.
