The eternity knot is a significant symbol of wisdom in Buddhism. This particular one is inspired by designs on a Qing dynasty altar fitting, which I came across at the Phoenix Art Museum. The borders on either side are from the base of a vase. Within the knot is a famous Urdu sher by the Indian poet, Sahir Ludhianvi : “vo afsāna jise anjām tak laanā na ho mumkin / use ik ḳhūb-sūrat moḌ de kar chhoḌnā achchhā” “For that tale which cannot be taken to an end / it is best to give a beautiful twist and leave it be” One interpretation of the eternity knot is the intertwining of wisdom and compassion
