What had Paul Gauguin not been in his life! A sailor, a successful merchant, a well established stockbroker, a highly respected family man. But all that meant nothing to him: he sacrificed all of his social achievement in favor of his irresistible thirst for palette and brush, which he fell in love with in his later years. The stock exchange was the first to throw him off: it doesn't like renegades. His art brought him no money. The organizers of Parisian art exhibitions only scoffed at his works: even in the art criteria, which had been considerably relaxed after the victory of Impressionism, Gauguin did not fit in with his static color figures. His colleagues and friends refused to recognize him as an artist. His wife Mette, who called him a "wretched scribbler", left him, took their five children and moved back to her parents in Copenhagen. A seemingly hopeless situation. What to do when both society and family reject you, when there is not even hope of any kind recognition?... Well, Paul Gauguin solved the problem in his own way. "If you are a real artist" - we would put it this way today - "you just need to become a 'downshifter'! Give up everything and everyone, and move to some cheaper country, to some wild island with less comfort but with more warmth. To where the cost of living is minimal. Find yourself somewhere at the back of beyond, and do there, without annoying social duties and burdens, only what is really important, even necessary, for you and for your art: namely, enjoy nature, the soft light and the flowers, and love those lush native beauties, and paint them: simply do enjoy paradise and live what has long been lost to the Western world.... Good advice, by the way, for some of today's artists who are fed up with just waiting and hoping for their place among the "recognized" ones, tired to fight for the public monetization of their works… Hurry up though: Paradise islands like Tahiti in Gauguin's time are all almost gone now, and there are hardly girls left, who, like his unwed teeny-wife Tahura, would seem so wonderfully calm, so relaxed, so unaware and happy with their humiliating and subordinate life...
