About The Artwork

As my artwork is always inspired by people, by the human figure, my inspiration goes beyond observations in my immediate vicinity, and beyond figures beholden in my memories and (day-)dreams. Rather, my inspiration extends to figures of public interest, whom I get to see and to know about on the daily news. Specifically, my inspiration for this artwork was triggered by the first Remembrance Day of Jina Mahsa Amini death in September 2022 after having been arrested by Iranian police and brutalized in custody. Her death inspired and fueled an immense, even revolutionary movement, against the oppression of women in Iran and worldwide. The viewer is faced with a woman of dignity, wearing her full long hair open as the quintessential symbol of freedom, and she is shown with hands and feet which allow her to go where she wants and to act like she wants. There are still layers of black, however, perhaps black veils that either protect her or that she is about to overcome and throw off. Anyhow, the "Black" in her life no longer wears her down or frightens her. With dignity and resilience, the seems to dance it way.

Having started with painting and drawing in the 1990s, as of 2010 I became a student with the Chinese-German artist and art Professor Qi Yang for several years. From 2013 to 2015, I took part in his master class. My artwork centers on Figurative Art, embracing the styles of Neo-Expressionism, Minimal Art and Glitch (a novelty in traditional fine art). My work includes painting, drawing and printmaking. Prominent in my artworks are people whom I observe, either presently or from memory, in everyday situations. This includes memorized imagos of myself and the people I encounter in various situations, at recent past, in daydreams or going far back to childhood. It also includes persons of public interest, whom I get to see and know about in the news. Markedly, the figures in my artworks are filled with feelings - feelings that we know to be „normal“. This said, the viewer can empathize instantly and almost on an instinctive level. Always, however, the viewer is challenged to interpret and associate. As to my techniques, they are free and experimental, and classical at once. Either on canvas or on paper, I paint with acrylic, aquarelle, oil, ink or pastels, but also self-made egg-tempera and casein. In my drawings I favor graphite and charcoal, occasionally also markers. In addition I love to do prints, oftentimes experimental monotypes.
