This is a colorful abstract painting done in watercolor, alcohol ink, and acrylic paint on textured polypropylene. Textured polypropylene is a 21st century artists' surface which is archival and which provides a perfectly flat, mat surface. Because it is essentially a plastic, it does not warp when painted on, and it allows for the use of new techniques not possible on canvas or paper. In this painting I created an underpainting in watercolor, which i then dripped alcohol ink onto. The alcohol ink is heavier than water, and so it pushes the watercolor out of its way and then dries very quickly. On top of this I poured acrylic pouring medium with black, white, and iridescent pigments swirled into it, which I then pushed around the surface with a silicone spatula. I am interested in the tensions between the perfectly flat ground and underpainting contrasted with the raised surfaces of the acrylic medium, which rises a couple millimeters above the the background surface. I'm also interested in how the bright colors in the background contrast with the muted tones in the foreground.
