Extinction Kingdom: man tames nature. Print

Referencing the painting "Peaceable Kingdom" by Edwards Hicks, one that he repainted multiple times, I replaced the animals from his painting, with animals now extinct. In this version, man has both conquered nature and nature has vengeance on man through, floods and hurricanes. In the center, is a circular shape inspired by an Amish folk quilt form, there are nods to cleanliness, pioneers, and home ownership by way of the scrubby dutch woman and the male figure wielding a gun. Ideas of property, control, and value, are further replicated in the highway "clover" patterns and generic home shapes. This artworks suggests that mans expansion and control of the environment has become more valuable than a harmonious relationship to the natural environment. This work is part of the "hidden white norms" series, a group of collaged based works, that identify and illustrate unspoken white cultural values through the rendering or appropriation of accumulated found and iconic images. For the past three years, I have been dissecting my "whiteness" in an attempt to make visible that which is unseen or unspoken. During this personal journey, I have attempted to untangle my ethnic and cultural identity and understand the historical social construct of whiteness. The artwork I have made is at times a documentation of my search, a reflection on my experience of whiteness, and/or an attempt to answer my own questions about the formation of racial identity in the U.S.
